It was with great interest that I read the comments of the last post regarding Brokeback Mountain jokes. Clearly they have been far more widespread than I realized in reference to Jake's appearance on Man vs. Wild. Even the Huffington Post, where these clips were snatched from, used Brokeback in the first sentence of their article about this show.
Why are people still talking about Brokeback Mountain? Apparently within the grand context of pop culture, it remains the fastest and easiest way to remind everyone who Jake Gyllenhaal is. He's that guy who was in that movie that caused such a stir that five and a half years later, people still haven't gotten over it...

So I watched the first clip again with homoeroticism on the brain and I laughed through the ENTIRE THING. Dear God. "The actual hole could be a lot bigger!" "The rocks are a welcome sight!" "It's okay! I've got you!" Someone rewrite that segment as a slash story NOW.
Gosh. I was getting the full body creeps just watching that 2nd video. I'm not really afraid of heights, but could really feel the palpable sense of "oh shit" when he reached the middle of that rope-you're already tired, you've now got to pull yourself upwards, and no matter what happens you can't go back. Respect.
On the other hand, after all the ado about the crevasses of doom in the snow, I expected a bit more drama when he did fall than the equivalent of a 6 year old flopping into the snow to make a snow angel.

I'm glad I got to see the 2nd clip. I did like the opening scene where, um "Bear" is looping a rope around, well somewhere around Jake's waist. That's not homo-erotic at all ;-)
But that is some scary shit! I'm not scared of heights at all, but going across a chasm on a skinny little rope is not my idea of a good time!
