Dear America, What Happened?

Looks like Prince of Persia will be coming in third at the box office this weekend in the United States.  That puts it squarely behind an animated ogre whose target audience wasn't even born the first time DreamWorks trotted him onto the big screen and a television adaptation that's getting almost as many headlines for its implied racism as for its thin storyline.

What can I say?  America likes its sequels.  (So how unfortunate that Prince of Persia's chances for one just got a little slimmer...)

On the upside, despite what those of us who live here like to think, the United States isn't the only country in the world, and Prince of Persia dominated the international market this weekend, pulling in far more than those other two movies combined, and finishing first in at least 40 out of 47 markets.

And Prince of Persia is already the 11th highest grossing adventure movie set in the desert of all time.  So that's gotta be good, right?

Alright, I'm trying too hard to make this sound better than it actually is.  It's my fault.  I didn't start my "Stand With Jake...Or Die!" campaign until far, far too late.  I take complete and full responsibility for Prince of Persia's U.S. box office numbers this Memorial Day weekend.

I just hope Jake doesn't take any of this personally.  After all, the movie is a success for him any way you look at it; regardless of how many people see it, he got a LEGO out of the deal.

Yeah.  Still awesome.

Take heart, my dear PG -- just because Jake isn't the Prince of America, like my photo said, he IS the Prince of the World! That at least should spark a sequel!! Oh, darn, he will have to develop all those muscles again.

technically for the weekend, PoP came in second. SATC2 and its band of lovely tramps did not have the parkour skillz to pull out their # with a weekend total, because they released the movie on a Thursday. However, if you don't factor in the numbers from Thursday, PoP beat out SATC2 for second place on the weekend. i nearly rejoiced when i found this out. okay, maybe im still rejoicing a bit. is gylls rejoicing? why doesnt he have his own photog constantly following him? sigggh.

PS- can we start submitting possible titles for the sequel?

PoP 2: rock and roll all night and parkour everyday?

sumi k,  May 31, 2010 at 1:02 PM

uh oh, now im not sure if im rejoicing! box office mojo claims the weekend estimates are for PoP to be in second place, but other sites are claiming SATC2 nabbed it.

this is not good! where's gylls to clarify this? is he busy getting in and out of cars again?

Becky Heineke May 31, 2010 at 1:17 PM

OH GOD. Now I'm super-nervous!! I had resigned myself to third but now there's chance we'll pull out a second place finish?! (Because really what was with that Thursday open anyway? I didn't think you could do that.)

And to think, I totally wouldn't have even checked again (because of the rage). Well, screw these estimates. I'm waiting for the hard numbers, dammit.

P.S. ALWAYS submit possible titles for sequels! I even suggest them for movies that won't have sequels. For instance, for years I've had my fingers crossed for October Sky 2: Homer Colonizes the Moon. (And now I have "Rock and Roll All Night" stuck in my head.)

okay! sumi got the scoop!

apparently PoP pulled in third for the 3 day weekend count (fri-sat-sun).

HOWEVER. if you factor the 4 day weekend due to the holiday, PoP pulled ahead and has second. I consider that a win *insert parkour flip*

So without the extra day for SATC2 (that's just cheeting, girls), second place?

And how about "Pack of Persia" for the sequel? They could clone Jake.

Sam May 31, 2010 at 4:40 PM

The extra day is cheating, why else bring it out a day early? Our movies come out on thursdays, and SATC2 is being released wednesday this week.... SO CHEATING

And for that they should be disqualified and should come last. S4M985 HAS SPOKEN

Sam May 31, 2010 at 4:41 PM

Oh and PG, LOVED the pics!!! FUNNY SHIT!

Becky Heineke May 31, 2010 at 6:51 PM

ISJ stands with S4M985. SATC2 is officially disqualified. Prince of Persia WINS THE WEEKEND. (We're ignoring the existence of Shrek franchise in general.)

Perhaps we should start a poll for sequel titles??? I'm accepting any and all suggestions.

sumi k,  May 31, 2010 at 8:42 PM

Pack of Persia has a nice ring to it indeed.

I say if they do clone the gylls, we should all get one. for personal use and observation.

I didn't think it had a thing to do with how many days, but the overall box office. The numbers I read are that

SATC2 got $37.1 Million and PoP got 37.8Million. I get irritated no end when the LA Times blog says PoP had a dismal weekend, since everyone knows SATC2 is eating dirt! Plus PoP has legs...(sigh!) and SATC2 has...cankles.

Sam June 1, 2010 at 2:59 AM

Yep, POP wins. Hands down. Who wants to see SATC2 anyway? Not me!

Delilah McGillicuddy you are right totally cankles.. and dont forget POP doesnt only have legs but awesome ripped arms and a torso like no other! (i wont even take this to the face!)

Hmm I would go with Prince of Persia: The Naked Sands. Anytime Prince Dastan has to release the sands (which is frequently) he somehow also loses his clothing. In slow motion. :D Call me up Disney! I'm available for hire. Or maybe this is the porno version. Ha.

Beautifully reasoned and well written but what impresses me the most is the respect with which you address the concerns of this parent. Well done!
